What is E-rate?
The Universal Service Fund for Schools and Libraries popularly known as the E-rate program provides all public and private schools access to telecommunications and advanced technologies they might not otherwise be able to afford.
Who is eligible for the program
All non-profit, private or public schools, elementary and secondary.
The discount is determined by the percentage of students who are eligible for free or reduced-priced lunches under the National School Lunch Program. (Actual participation in a lunch program is not required)
Eligible Services
Under the E-rate program schools and libraries may apply to be reimbursed up to 90% for the following:
- High Speed Internet access, T1
- Network servers and server operating systems and licenses
- Wireless access points, switches, routers and installation
- Network wiring and Fiber Optic Links, Technical support
How are the funds allocated
The FCC has allocated $2.25 Billion dollars annually for this program. The grant is funded by the universal service charge which is billed to every phone account nationwide
